Dubai = High Teas!

(This is part of a summer trip report using miles and points to fly first class on Emirates from JFK to Dubai/Paris, costing $41 and 100K Alaska miles; the cost of these flights would have been $23,914! I pinch myself to think I got such an unbelievable value for my miles!)

It’s been over a month since I last wrote (busy with family and friends) and I’ve missed writing AND YOU! I love reading your comments, so keep them coming!

We only stayed one night at the Burj Al Arab, but we made the most of our time there, with early check-in and late check-out! We went to the private beach, worked out with an awesome view, walked all over the property, went to the indoor pool, rode the “tram” to the nearby Souk Madinet Jumeirah for some shopping, and took an abra (small boat) tour around the canals there. ALL of this was complementary because of our stay at the Burj Al Arab. Here’s some photos that show it off!

Since we told them this was a birthday trip, we even got birthday treats! And even more special was seeing my son, who is on a year long contract in the Middle East! And a cart was delivered to our suite full of birthday surprises, ie, a dozen red roses, chocolate cake, etc!   DSC01730DSC01732DSC01737DSC01740DSC01745DSC01753

Breakfast was included in our stay, and it was hard to decide where to eat. But after perusing the available restaurants, we decided on the Asian restaurant, Jinsui, which included ALL available kinds of foods, buffet style. There were at least five different buffet stations, all varying food nationalities! After that, we enjoyed the outdoor pool, where they bring you cold towels and chilled drinks. DSC01853

DSC01854DSC01859DSC01864DSC01858DSC01866DSC01865Later that day, we went to our second night in Dubai, the Burj Khalifa…the tallest building in the world. We had another late afternoon tea, located “At the Top,” 124 floors high! This is the ONLY way to visit the Burj Khalifa, I think. You get to enjoy all the views at a relaxed pace, can stay as long as you want, and get a bird’s eye view of the “dancing fountains” below. This is lots better than just going to the observatory, in my opinion. And this was my favorite of the two afternoon teas! DSC01890DSC01892DSC01896DSC01894DSC01897DSC01899DSC01906DSC01909DSC01913DSC01891DSC01911

That evening, we went to the Mall of the Emirates, one of the largest malls in the world. This is the mall with the indoor ski slope, Dubai Aquarium, and right outside are the dancing fountains, the world’s largest (of course, you are in Dubai)! The shows are in the afternoon and every thirty minutes in the evening. They are in sync to selected music and the spray reaches heights of up to 450 feet, use 22,000 gallons of airborne water, in the 24 acre Burj Lake! A must see in Dubai! DSC01953DSC01878DSC01879DSC01945DSC01946DSC01961DSC01955DSC01959

The Burj Khalifa Armani Hotel was a huge disappointment to me. The room was very small (Best Western seems bigger) and dark, but of course, we had been totally spoiled by our two bedroom, two story penthouse at the Burj Al Arab! We did get to watch the fountains from up high. And it was a short night because of our early morning departure to Paris! DSC01970DSC01880DSC01881DSC01885DSC01995DSC01997

Good bye Dubai and next, Paris via Emirates business class…

Burj Al Arab = 7 STARS!

DSC01813

(This is part of a summer trip report using miles and points to fly first class on Emirates to Dubai/Paris, costing $41 and 100K miles).

We were able to fly Emirates to Paris, with a two day stopover in Dubai for $41 and 100K Alaska miles, see previous post for more info. BUT the cost of those flights would have been $23,914! I pinch myself to think I got such an unbelievable value for my miles! And the value for our two free nights at the Hyatt in NYC was $463, including free breakfasts! My hobby is a lot of work sometimes, but I definitely enjoy the benefits!

Since our flights were so inexpensive, we decided to splurge on our stay in Dubai, hence the iconic Burj Al Arab. We’d booked the least expensive room, using a summer special, which included breakfast. We were arriving early in the morning, so I’d written the hotel and asked for early check-in and a room upgrade, if available. You must have reservations to even enter this man-made island and we were surprised to be met at the door by an agent and taken upstairs. I kept wondering in my jet lagged mind why we were leaving the lobby area.

DSC01658

When she started the check in process, I realized we were in our room…and we DID get upgraded to a two bedroom, 3600 sq ft, two story suite! This upgraded room cost $3,958 at the time of our stay (of course we paid nowhere near that much when we’d booked our lowly room months before). This “suite” is bigger than my house, we kept getting lost inside, and here are some pictures to show it off!

DSC01629

The downstairs included two living areas, a kitchen, dining area, and a half bath. Notice all the gold accents, which is very prevalent in Dubai.

DSC01630

DSC01631DSC01632DSC01633DSC01634DSC01635The upstairs had two bedrooms, each with their own bath, closet, dressing, and living area.

DSC01637

DSC01636DSC01638DSC01639DSC01640DSC01641DSC01643DSC01646DSC01647DSC01648DSC01649DSC01652DSC01653DSC01654DSC01655DSC01656DSC01657DSC01659DSC01660DSC01661DSC01662DSC01663DSC01664DSC01665DSC01667DSC01668On our floor, we had two personal butlers and asked for late check out the next day at 4:00, so we really got time to enjoy the property, but more on that later.

It was really hard to get pictures of the view, which was spectacular (we were on the 13th floor). I’m assuming it was because of some kind of film to prevent others from seeing in…we were told on our tour of the suite not to worry if we saw window washers because they could not see inside!

Supposedly the Burj Al Arab was so expensive to build they don’t even know how much it cost! And it is proclaimed, by itself, to be “the only seven star hotel in the world.” I really do agree – I’ve never stayed in anything like it and I’m sure I never will…it was a once in a lifetime event and very over the top!

Next up, high tea at Burj Al Arab and activities inside and nearby.

Emirates 1st Class to Dubai/Paris for $41 + 100K miles!

DSC01576

(This is part of a summer trip report traveling to Europe on Emirates First Class using 100K Alaska miles and costing $41).

It’s been so long since I’ve written and I’ve missed it. My summer was super busy, and I’ve had an even busier start to my school year! But I’m back in the swing of things now, so here come my blog posts about my summer trip to Dubai, Europe, and Russia using miles and points!

We started our trip by flying to NYC and spending two nights. We used our annual Hyatt free nights to stay at the Hyatt Regency Jersey City on the Hudson and this was our view!

DSC01518

One perk of the Hyatt credit card is a free night at any category 1-4 hotel and this hotel fit the bill, being just one stop on the Path train and you’re at the World Trade Center. We didn’t have lots of time there, but I did go up in the new One World Observatory; they have an absolutely wonderful presentation before you get to the top and 360 degree views! Here’s a view outside our hotel of it.

The Hyatt even included free breakfasts, so after paying zero dollars for two nights in NYC, we were off to JFK and our flight to Dubai.

DSC01547

How did I get those 100K miles to fly on Emirates anyway? Since we have two small businesses, my husband and I both got the personal and business Alaska Air Visa credit cards from Bank of America, which accrued 25,000 miles each. (This offer is available right now, if interested). And the best use of Alaska miles, in my opinion, is to redeem for flights on Emirates. There seems to be lots of availability and it’s easy to book your trip using Alaska miles. And another plus with Emirates, is that you can have a stopover in Dubai, so our trip for 100K miles continued on to Paris after  two days in Dubai.

Here’s some photos of the lounge at JFK for first and business class passengers.

5 Things I LOVE about Ireland!

DSC01188

(This is the last trip report about Faroe Islands and Ireland using 150,000 British Airways Avios points for a first class round trip “Travel Together” ticket, paying taxes/fees).

On the way to Ireland, we had a long layover in Copenhagen, so I went into the city and up the Church of our Saviour spire, climbing 400 steps for a 360 degree view of the city! They closed it just as I left because of wind conditions. I also went on a boat tour and then Nyhavn Street. It was a quick tour of the city, but better then sitting in an airport!

DSC00950

Ireland is a place I’ve always wanted to visit and the country exceeded my expectations! Here are my top five things I LOVED about Ireland!

1. Weather…it can be cold and rainy there, but we had glorious sunshine every single day! We started our trip headed from Dublin towards Dingle Peninsula, with a stop along the way at Bayly Farm B&B. It is a working farm, with wonderful hosts, and we wish we’d had more time there. I love the historic feel of these old homes. Which leads to number two…

DSC00992

2. Bed and Breakfast…we stayed at B&B’s throughout Ireland and I don’t think you can go wrong. The full Irish breakfast is fantastic (I was too hungry, so I never got a picture). We drove around the Ring of Kerry before heading to Dingle, which leads to number three…

3. SCENERY! The scenery was just amazing and pictures speak louder than words…

We drove the Gap of Dunloe, but waited until after 6:30 pm so we’d not be in the way of the horse carts.

This is the view from our B&B in Dingle! And after a full hearty Irish breakfast, we drove the Dingle Peninsula (more scenery)…

DSC01087

DSC01101

We took a ferry to save driving time, headed to the infamous Cliffs of Moher, which leads to number four…

4. Green– Ireland IS the “Emerald Isle” and I can understand why…even the sides of the cliffs are green! The Cliffs of Moher was crowded, and a bit touristy, but still one of my favorites.

There is one thing I didn’t love about Ireland…their roads. They are narrow, some with high hedges or rock walls, AND you are driving on the wrong side of the road! BUT it was necessary to do and see all we did. Next up, my long summer trip…
