Great Barrier Reef!

(This is the last trip report to NZ/AU where I flew business class to NZ on Qantas for 125,000 AA miles and $131, returning on Hawaiian Air via Honolulu).

Cairns seemed like a small town to me; we flew there from Sydney, with no boat reservations, big mistake! But our wonderful family-owned hotel, Reef Palms, made lots of phone calls and was able to get us on a last minute snorkeling cruise from Port Douglas, and that evening we went into town for a bite to eat.

Another dinner of fish and chips, this time with shrimp…the fish throughout the trip was extraordinary!

Our snorkeling boat was a small one, which we preferred, and took us to three different spots, which enabled us to see a variety of fish and coral. They provide everything, all equipment, RX snorkeling masks, wetsuits, lunch, and snacks!

These pictures were all taken with my smaller camera enclosed in an underwater casing, which does keep the camera dry. We were told by the captain that the clarity of the water depends on recent rains and the cloudiness of the sky. We had a partly cloudy day, with rain a couple days before.

Since I wasn’t sure my other camera would work, the following photos were taken with a throw away underwater camera.

The Great Barrier Reef was a bit disappointing to me. It’s much more colorful than the pictures show, with lots of fish, but just not as spectacular as the Maldives, in my opinion. Good-bye Cairns…

And good-bye Sydney…

And hello, Hawaiian Airlines…

carins 6

Hawaiian Airlines had reclining seats only in Business class, but the friendly service and good food made up for it somewhat!

I spent the day in Honolulu with friends and we drove around the island. (I don’t think this is Hawaii, but I was tired of taking pictures, and it will just have to do)!

Next up is a gem of a museum in the heartland of the USA, Kansas City, Missouri!

Sydney’s New Year’s Eve brings 1.5 million people downtown and we were fortunate to book the Sydney Intercontinental, which is right in the middle of the action. They close streets, there are masses of people, and we had to have a special ticket just to get into our hotel later that night! We spoke to some Americans staying farther away and they didn’t get back to their hotel until 4:00am! We used 50,000 points per night for a room that sold for $546, and here are some pictures…

And finally, FIREWORKS! It was one of the best fireworks show I’ve ever been to. At one point, they had lights on the Harbor Bridge which turned it into a waterfall! We, along with all the other hordes of people, were enthralled!

Next is Cairns and the Great Barrier Reef!

Sydney is stunning!

(This is a trip report to NZ/AU where I flew business class on Qantas for 125,000 AA miles and $131, returning on Hawaiian Air, with a stop in Honolulu).

Sydney was spectacular, with friendly people and big city vibes! I had to keep pinching myself and was thinking, “Am I really in Sydney, Australia?” Our first afternoon, we took the ferry to Manly Bay, a nice way to enjoy the harbor and a wonderful fish dinner there. Cruising past Harbor Bridge, and no, we didn’t do any climbing or bunjee jumping!

The next day was very busy! We went to Featherdale Wildlife Park, about 45 minutes out of the city, to see the animals. This was a bit of a disappointment, but you HAVE to see koalas and kangaroos in Australia!  (: DSC_0337

It doesn’t look like it, but this is a real koala, asleep of course, since they sleep 16-20 hours a day!

Hiking Cradle Mountain…

(This is part of a trip report to NZ/AU, where I flew business class on Qantas to NZ using 125,000 AA miles and costing $131 and returning on Hawaiian Air, with a stop in Honolulu.)

We spent our last few nights in Launceston (pronounced lawn-ches-tun). Although we didn’t really visit the city, we were on the go to experience more of that beautiful Tasmanian, Australian scenery! On our two hour drive to Cradle Mountain, we just happened upon this lovely hill-top restaurant and garden.

We stopped at Sheffield, the town of murals. Because of an economic downturn thirty years ago, they came up with a plan to have an “outdoor art gallery of heroic proportions, depicting the history of its’ district and people.”

Cradle Mountain is a national park, and the mountain was named in the early 1800’s by an explorer because of its’ similarity to a baby’s cradle.

It was beautiful weather for a hike…we took the loop to Glacier Rock and to the Boat Shed. This photo shows a bit more of the “rock.”

The Tasmanian Devil lives only in Tasmania, and of course, we wanted to see it before we left this island! The species is endangered and was threatened with extinction, so they are raising “devils” in captivity, trying to build up the population.
